Why are office acoustics so important all of a sudden?

The corporate world has been undergoing a process of constant, ever-repeating renewal since the early 1990s.

Office space is being used more and more efficiently, while the floor area dedicated to individual desk space is being reduced. New forms of communication call for direct contact between office workers. The trend is towards open-plan, transparent office landscapes. Moving closer together brings with it advantages, but the downside is being able to overhear colleagues’ conversations and constant interruptions to one’s concentration.

There are no laws to make office workers speak more quietly – conversations continue at the usual volume. Despite acceptable reverberation times in offices, the intelligibility of phrases and words often remains too high.
